Mission Statement
Galerie de Brug, meaning "The Bridge" in Dutch, originated in Sahnayah, Syria, in 2001 and operated until 2008. Initially a dynamic part of Damascus' art scene, the gallery hosted diverse events, from book signings to poetry readings. Now revitalized in Davidson, North Carolina, Galerie de Brug's mission persists: promoting emerging Middle Eastern artists while spotlighting local talents with a global touch. We're committed to nurturing multifaceted creativity, including supporting Middle Eastern refugee artists venturing into local art-related businesses. Our dual mission seeks to enrich the community and beyond by making art universally accessible.

About the Founder

Rebecca Joubin, currently a professor of Arab Studies at Davidson College, has a captivating background. Before joining Davidson, she curated an art gallery in Sahnayah, Syria. While pursuing her doctoral studies in the Middle East, she began amassing a collection of regional art, struck by the hospitality and openness of local artists. Even during her PhD, these artists welcomed her into their homes, granting her a unique accessibility to their art. Now in her role as a professor, she remains grateful for the opportunity to introduce her students to this enchanting art world. Her true passion lies in supporting emerging artists and bridging the gap between Middle Eastern art and our community. She envisions an inclusive gallery space and exhibitions tailored for these artists, aspiring to make art widely accessible, both locally and beyond.
